sports_ff_track_boys_0520The Fairfield sprint relay has flirted with greatness all season.  The broke through at the area meet with a school record time and then made their way to the Mike Myers arena in Austin to do one thing…..reset their own record.

Rain did not cooperate again but the meet went on with minimal delays and the Eagle sprint relay of Tyrin West, Michael Gibson, Rahiem Hayes and Charles Oliver took the track on Saturday afternoon.

They ran their fastest yet, breaking their own school record by nearly three-quarters of a second.  The 41.71 is established as the new school record breaking their 42.49, set just a few weeks ago.  It was not enough to take gold, since the 41.21 by Stafford edged Fairfield for the state title.  Atlanta finished third for the bronze.

Oliver also ran in the 200 meter dash and would also bring home hardware.  He ran one of his fastest times of the season and finished third.  The 21.73 was slightly behind Hunter Markwardt of Argyle and Hezekiah Jones of Stafford.  Both Jones and Oliver were the anchor leg of the sprint relay so the fans received an extra treat watching this duo run against each other.

The Fairfield 4x200 relay also competed but did not make the medal stand.  Charles Oliver, Michael Gibson, Rahiem Hayes and Tyrin West took the track in a very fast race.  Fairfield ran a 1:27.14 and finished fourth behind region mate Jasper.  Stafford finished second and Gilmer won the event with a 1:25.49, breaking the conference record.

sports_ff_track_girls_0520Sophomore Da’meka Shed ran in the ladies 300 meter hurdles and finished seventh.

The story of the meet was Charlotte Brown.  The Emory-Rains senior pole vault participant has qualified for the state meet the last three years.  She is a tremendous athlete in an already challenging event.  The other obstacle is that she has a vision problem that declares her legally blind.   She times the steps and worked hard to qualify for the state meet again in her senior season.  She cleared a personal best 11’6” in Austin which was good enough for a third place finish.  She and her guide dog took the medal stand together for the award ceremony.

Tee Owens of Mexia was one inch from the medal stand with a fourth place finish in the long jump.  Her 18’7” was just shorter that Virginia Kerley of Taylor, who placed third.  The Mexia 4x200 meter relay of Kaitlyn Matthews, Jidaija King, Tyzane Williams, and Tee Owens finished sixth.

Jasmine McQuirter of Teague competed in two events and finished fifth in the 100 meter dash and fourth in the long jump.

In other local finishers, Jordan Washington of Crockett finished second in the 110 meter hurdles and won the 300 meter hurdles.  Mason Munoz of Palestine took sixth in the 800 meter run.

Senior sprinter Dianna Kirven of Coolidge finished her high school career with three gold medals at the state meet.  She set a conference record in the long jump at 17’2.5.”  She also won the 400 meter dash by a wide margin and returned to set her second conference record with a 26.19 time in the 200 meter dash.
